Today we are going to use the Element of Art, Space, to make some bookmarks for all of your summer reading. These bookmarks are landscapes which show a vast distance of space. We will use some drawing tricks to show how to create that illusion of space.

This is an Art Quest video with a great explanation of Space.

Today we will take a look at the beautiful textile designs of the Kuna Indians, called Molas. Textile means that something is made of cloth or fabric. The Kuna Indians live off of the cost of Panama on the San Blas Islands. You can watch the videos following my demonstration to explore these Molas more carefully. Have fun making a paper Mola.

These next two videos provide examples of Kuna Molas.

5-12-20 Grade 2 Art Lesson

Let's have some fun with Origami. Remember, Origami is the Art of paper folding and it comes from the country of Japan. You do not need special paper to do Origami, but it must be square. Fold a rectangular piece of paper one corner over to meet the side of the paper and cut off the excess. You will have a square. Try making the rabbit and penguin below.

Watch this beautiful video about the history of Origami.

This video introduces us to the world famous Origami artist Robert Lang.

Origami Facts

  • Origami is the ancient Japanese art of paper folding.
  • The name origami comes from two Japanese words ‘ori‘(to fold) and ‘kami ‘(paper).
  • The, kami, also means ‘spirit’ or ‘god’ and origami was first used only for religious ceremonies.
  • The origami that we know today is greatly influenced by the master origami artist Yoshizawa Akira. For centuries, the same traditional folds were made but in the 1950s he published books showing many more models of origami other than the traditional ones. This reintroduced origami to people around the world.

5-5-20 Grade 2 Art Lesson- Symmetry Collage

Only complete this lesson for today.

Sym Collage

This is a wonderful video showing symmetry in nature.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMC_1dVtd4c

This video has a cute song singing about types of symmetry.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBW1dyOwUbA

In our last lesson we used our names to make a "Crazy Creature" with symmetry. Hopefully, you watched both videos and you understand what symmetry means. Today I would like you to go outside and with help from mom or dad, collect some objects from nature. (Remember, leaves of three let them be. It could be poison ivy.) First, I painted the back of a paper plate with water color. If you do not have a paper plate you could use a sheet of paper. Then arrange and glue your nature objects to make a collage that has symmetry.

Fold a piece of drawing paper in half. Write your name across the fold line with pencil. Trace over your name with a black crayon or marker. Flip your paper over, you should be able to see your name through the paper. Trace it again. Now it is on the front and back of your paper. Keep the paper folded. Flip it over again to the blank side. Trace trough the paper again. If this is confusing, I have demonstrated the process in the video above. When you open your paper your name will appear forwards and upside-down giving your design symmetry. Add eyes, mouths, arms legs, feet, whatever you like to make it a Crazy Creature, but be sure that whatever you draw on one side you must draw on the other.

Claude Monet is one of the world’s most famous artists. When you were in Kindergarten, I read you a story about a little frog who visited Claude Monet's garden. Monet loved to paint flowers, especially the flowers that bloomed in a pond that he made in his garden. Watch my demonstration video below for directions.

Watch the video below which takes you inside Monet's garden. You can still visit it today in France. The video shows many examples of his paintings, including the one below called "Japanese Footbridge and Water Lily Pool". You will see that Claude Monet would paint the same thing many times at different times of day to show how light changes the way things appear.
